Negros Occidental mulls GCQ extension

Gilbert Bayoran - The Philippine Star

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — Negros Occidental may remain under general community quarantine (GCQ) after May 15.

“I don’t think we’re ready to allow everyone to go out. It is a perfect quarantine model for now,” Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson said yesterday.

Lacson said resumption of flights after May 15 is a “major concern.”

“We have to plan how to receive regular flights,” he said.

The Department of Health-Western Visayas regional office said four of the 51 seafarers who arrived in this city on April 28 tested positive for coronavirus disease 2019.

There are now 17 COVID-19 cases in Negros Occidental, including 11 in Bacolod City.

Negros Occidental shifted to GCQ on May 1, but this highly urbanized city remains under enhanced community quarantine until May 15.

Lacson said the return of stranded residents and returning overseas Filipino workers should be coordinated with the provincial government.
