House approves OFW department bill
MANILA, Philippines — Voting 173-11 with no abstentions, the House of Representatives yesterday approved on third and final reading a bill that seeks to create a new agency for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
Lawmakers passed House Bill 5832 or the Department of Filipinos Overseas and Foreign Employment, which would address the concerns of around 10 million OFWs, including seafarers and household service workers.
The bill is among the measures prioritized by the leadership of Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano.
Under the measure, the P5-billion assistance fund currently under the purview of the Department of Foreign Affairs will go to the OFW Department.
The bill also places the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration under the jurisdiction of the Department of Filipinos Overseas and Foreign Employment.
