Ex-soldier runs amuck, kills woman, self

CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines  – A former Army soldier went on a shooting rampage, killing a woman and wounding five others before turning the gun on himself in General Trias City, Cavite, yesterday morning.

The gunman, identified as Junny Palacio, 48, died at the scene due to a gunshot wound in the forehead.

Police identified the other fatality as Murharma Bautista, 59, of Barangay Santiago.

Taken to the hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds were Alberto Sorio, 57; Recto Marbit, 47, and Pilar Bacaoco, 34.

Responding police officers Chief M/Sgt. Zaldy Espiritu, commander of the San Francisco police community precinct, and Staff M/Sgt. Reynante Tan of the PCP station were also wounded in the incident.

Espiritu and Tan suffered gunshot wounds in the arms and abdomen.

Reports said Palacio, armed with a revolver, went to a market in Barangay Santiago to look for people who allegedly destroyed his reputation. 

The suspect reportedly confronted Bautista and Sorio and shot them.

Palacio also reportedly shot Marbit, who was tricycle nearby.

Bacaoco was shot in her house.

Espiritu and Tan responded to the scene, but they too were shot by Palacio, who turned the gun on himself. –  With Emmanuel Tupas
