MANILA, Philippines — The driver of a passenger jeepney who plowed through students crossing the pedestrian lane in Makati on Thursday tested positive for shabu.

Crisalde Tamparo, 31, underwent drug testing following his arrest after the accident that left a high school student dead and seven others injured, city police investigation unit chief Maj. Gideon Ines said.

Ines said Tamparo was previously cited for a traffic violation.

“That’s why he failed to present his driver’s license to authorities,” Ines said.

Tamparo is being held by police on charges of homicide.

Jules Villapando, 13, was crossing the pedestrian lane along with her schoolmates when they were hit by the jeepney driven by Tamparo in Barangay Poblacion.

Villapando died while being taken to a hospital.
