BINMALEY, Pangasinan, Philippines — At least 21 pigs in Barangay Linoc in this town were culled yesterday to contain the spread of African swine fever (ASF).

Provincial veterinarian Jovito Tabarejos said blood tests confirmed that the culled pigs were affected by ASF.

The pigs were within the one-kilometer radius of a piggery wherein 34 pigs died due to ASF last week.

Tabarejos said about 320 pigs in backyard piggeries in Barangay Linoc are under observation.

“It will depend if there will be new cases... Then perhaps we can include the entire barangay where pigs will have to be culled,” he said.

Tabarejos said blood tests on pigs in neighboring barangays are ongoing.

Last year, hogs in Mapan-dan and Bayambang were affected by ASF.

Pangasinan would have been declared ASF free had new cases were not reported.
