Negros lawyer shot; probers eye land dispute

Robertzon Ramirez, Gilbert Bayoran - The Philippine Star

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — Probers are looking into a land dispute case that lawyer Ray Moncada handled as the motive in the attempt on his life in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental on Friday.

Moncada, 74, was shot in front of his house in Barangay Daro, Col. Julian Entoma, Negros Oriental police officer-in-charge, said.

Moncada reportedly underwent surgery and is now in stable condition in a hospital.

Initial investigation showed Moncada was shot when he answered the doorbell. Five bullet shells were recovered at the scene.

Prior to the incident, four persons reportedly visited Moncada at his office and threatened him. The suspects also reportedly left a death threat note in front of his house.

It was the first gun attack that targeted a lawyer in Negros this year.

‘Solve case’

The Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) condemned the slay attempt on Moncada and urged the police to immediately solve the case.

“Attacks on lawyers and violence in general mock our justice system. They erode faith and confidence in the rule of law and in our government,” the IBP said.

“We strongly condemn the shooting of Atty. Moncada and seek the quick identification of his assailants, their resolute prosecution, timely resolution of the criminal case and full punishment for the evildoers,” the IBP said in a statement.

The group said it would extend assistance to Moncada and his family.
