Bombs unearthed in Bilibid
MANILA, Philippines — Five bombs were found buried in the New Bilibid Prison (NBP)’s maximum security compound on Friday afternoon.
A group of inmates were “doing construction work” and digging near the compound’s multi-purpose hall when they unearthed an item wrapped in a pink cloth and electrical tape, according to a report released by the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor).
The inmates asked for assistance from the security officers, who cordoned off the area and brought in the Muntinlupa City police’s bomb squad to defuse the five improvised explosives wrapped in the cloth.
Gabriel Chaclag, BuCor’s public information office chief, told The STAR that the bombs could have been buried “for some time.”
The discovery of the bombs came a few months after an explosion rocked the national penitentiary while illegal shanties were demolished in the NBP’s maximum security compound.
