Mindanao checkpoints to continue after martial law
MINDANAO, Philippines — Military checkpoints in Mindanao will not be dismantled even after martial law is lifted on Dec. 31.
Brig. Gen. Eduard Arevalo, Armed Forces of the Philippines spokesman, said soldiers deployed in the region would not let their guards down despite improved security situation.
“Definitely checkpoints are going to continue. After all, even without martial law checkpoints were there,” Arevalo said.
He said the military would also continue to hunt down members of Islamic-inspired groups, such as the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters.
Citing the recommendation of police and military officials, Malacañang announced on Tuesday that President Duterte is not extending martial law in Mindanao.
The President declared martial law in May 2017 after Maute and Abu Sayyaf bandits attacked Marawi. Congress thrice extended the declaration.
“We will continue to collaborate with local chief executives and... communities... to sustain the gains brought about by martial law,” Arevalo said.
