MANILA, Philippines — The procession of the Black Nazarene in January next year will not take its traditional route along Jones Bridge, a police official announced yesterday.

Manila Police District (MPD) director Gen. Bernabe Balba said the procession would pass through Ayala Bridge instead.

“The Department of Public Works and Highway (DPWH) did not give clearance to allow the devotees to pass through Jones Bridge to avoid accidents,” Balba told The STAR.

The DPWH said the bridge could not withstand the weight of millions of devotees expected to join the procession.

According to Balba, the MPD, personnel of the Quiapo Church and other government agencies have started the preparations for the Feast of the Black Nazarene on Jan. 9 next year.

He said they have not received any security threats during the event.

The MPD will be assisted by the Armed Forces, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, Department of Health, Philippine Red Cross, among others.

“As always, it will be a security nightmare but we are prepared for any emergencies,” Balba said.
