MANILA, Philippines — A man, hailed as a “hero” after he was seen in a viral video clinging to a moving jeepney in Manila while beating up a passenger for groping his friend’s wife, was arrested for robbery Wednesday night.

Jomar Alingod was arrested by Pat. Marc Kevin Manayan, who reportedly saw him snatch the cell phone of a 52-year-old businesswoman walking at the corner of Taft Avenue and Finance Road, according to Maj. Rosalino Ibay Jr., who heads the Special Mayor’s Reaction Team.

Ibay said his men took the suspect to his hideout to identify other members of his gang, but residents nearly ganged upon the lawmen after Aligod started shouting he was being arrested illegally.

He said police learned Aligod had been in and out of the city jail on charges of robbery. Police officers filed a robbery charge against him.
