DILG to LGUs: Crack down on vandals

Romina Cabrera - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has directed local government units (LGUs) to fully enforce ordinances against vandalism after activists defaced the newly cleaned Lagusnilad underpass in Manila.

“LGUs should… see to it that they strictly enforce their laws on vandalism so that vandals will face the consequences of their actions,” DILG Undersecretary and spokesman Jonathan Malaya said in a statement yesterday.

Malaya said LGUs should ensure proper implementation of their ordinances that penalize vandalism and make use of their surveillance cameras to catch vandals.

He added that the Philippine National Police should not hesitate to apprehend those found violating these ordinances.

Malaya also urged militant groups to express their social concerns through other ways instead of defacing public properties.
