MANILA, Philippines — A six-kilometer bypass road in Lopez, Quezon, which is expected to ease traffic along the Manila South Road-Daang Maharlika Highway, was opened to motorists yesterday.

Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark Villar said the road project, which cost P718 million, would ensure that those traveling to Bicol through the southern part of Quezon would reach their destination faster.

“Improving access in major roadways is a key factor in economic growth... We will continue to put prime importance on these high-impact road projects as they play a crucial role in our holistic development,” Villar said.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said the acquisition of road right-of-way, earthworks, concrete paving as well as drainage and protection works for the bypass road started in May 2015.

The agency said it is also expanding a 2.13-kilometer segment of the road from four to six lanes.

Right of way

Meanwhile, the DPWH said it entered into an agreement with the Land Bank of the Philippines last month to expedite appraisal activities on right-of-way (ROW) claims.

The agreement will make it easier for the DPWH to request appraisal of claims as payment could be made upon completion and issuance of the certification by implementing offices, which is expected to be rendered within 10 days upon receipt of request.

“We are committed to accelerating the ROW acquisition in order to build traffic solutions to our motorists,” Villar said.
