ILOILO CITY , Philippines —  A 50-year-old man died while trying to rescue another tourist in Boracay on Thursday.

Police identified the fatality as Roberto Baisas, a resident of Sta. Cruz, Laguna, who was on the island with his family for a vacation.

Pat. Jessie Nolido, Malay police investigator, said Baisas was on the shore when he saw a drowning James Matthew Alfafara, 20, a resident of Carcar, Cebu, asking for help.

When he swam toward Alfafara, strong waves swept both of them back to the sea.

Members of the Stand Poodle Board Association responded to the incident and took the victims to the beachfront.

They were given first aid treatment before being taken to the Ciriaco S. Tirol Hospital, where Baisas was declared dead on arrival.

Alfafara has been declared out of danger.
