Pasay precinct chief, 2 cops sacked for extortion
MANILA, Philippines – A police precinct commander in Pasay City and two policemen were relieved from their posts on Wednesday for allegedly extorting “protection money” from bus operators.
Capt. Mark Oyad, head of the Police Community Precinct 7, was sacked along with Corporals Reynald Pallangeo Macwes and Jimuel Ilagan Bernal.
Macwes and Bernal were apprehended during an entrapment operation conducted by the Philippine National Police Integrity Monitoring and Enforcement Group at a transport terminal along EDSA.
National Capital Region Police Office chief Brig. Gen. Debold Sinas said the suspects were allegedly collecting at least P100 daily from bus and van operators in Malibay in exchange for police protection.
Oyad supposedly demanded that the grease money be raised to P1,000 per day for every bus and van.
When the complainant, whom police did not identify for security reasons, asked to reduce the amount, Oyad allegedly threatened that he would be arrested on drug charges.
This prompted the complainant to seek police help, resulting in the arrest of Macwes and Bernal.
Police said the two yielded P100 in marked money and their service firearms.
