More pigs in Pangasinan town culled due to ASF
BAYAMBANG, Pangasinan, Philippines — More barangays in this town may be placed under a state of calamity due to African swine fever (ASF) even as more pigs are being culled, Mayor Cesar Quiambao said yesterday.
On Monday, seven barangays within the one-kilometer radius of Barangay Apalen, where 30 hogs were found positive for ASF, were placed under a state of calamity.
Surveillance within the seven to 10-kilometer radius is ongoing.
At least 59 hogs have reportedly died of the swine disease as of Tuesday.
Quiambao said the culling of pigs continued yesterday. A total of 212 were pigs culled on Tuesday.
Lt. Col. Marceliano Desamito Jr., Bayambang police chief, said security was tightened to ensure that the ban on the entry of pigs and pork is strictly implemented.
Meanwhile, the provincial veterinarian office and several hog raisers filed cases against Roger Erpelo, who reportedly brought ASF-affected pigs from Bulacan in Mapandan town.
