BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — Controversial police Maj. Jovie Espenido has been transferred to this city.

Lt. Col. Joem Malong, regional police spokesman, confirmed yesterday a memorandum from the directorate for personnel and record management at Camp Crame on Espenido’s transfer effective Oct. 4.

However, Malong said Espenido’s designation has yet to be determined.

Prior to the appointment, Espenido has been police chief in Ozamiz City.

Ozamiz Mayor Reynaldo Parojinog Sr., his wife Susan, brother Octavio and sister Mona were killed in an anti-drug operation in 2017 during Espenido’s term.

Espenido was also the police chief in Albuera, Leyte, when former mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr., who was detained on drug charges, was killed in his cell by police officers serving a search warrant.

President Duterte gave an award to Espenido for his contribution to the government’s war on drugs as police chief of Ozamiz and Albuera.

He was named as Iloilo City police chief in 2017, but the appointment was withdrawn because his rank is lower than the requirement.

Espenido also had brief stints as Catanduanes and Samar police chiefs in 2018 before he was reassigned to Ozamiz City.
