3 cops wounded in Mindoro ambush
CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines — The deputy police chief of Pinamalayan in Oriental Mindoro and two of his men were wounded in an ambush in Soccorro town yesterday.
Chief M/Sgt. Ivan Fortus, Senior M/Sgt. Irene Lazo and Cpl. Ivy Carmona were taken to the Oriental Mindoro Provincial Hospital for treatment, Lt. Col. Socrates Faltado, Mimaropa police spokesman, said.
A certain Capt. Ruelito and Noli de la Cruz, chairman of Barangay Palayan, were unhurt.
Police said the victims were in a patrol vehicle on their way to attend a radio program in Calapan City when they were waylaid in Barangay Pasi 2 at around 7:45 a.m.
The victims said they also heard a loud explosion as the police vehicle sped off.
Probers are verifying reports that New People’s Army rebels or criminal gang members perpetrated the ambush. – Emmanuel Tupas
