OFW deployment to Russia underway
MANILA, Philippines — The government will soon deploy overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to Russia, a labor official reported yesterday.
Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello said the Philippines and Russia are set to sign an agreement on the deployment of OFWs.
“There will be signing of labor agreement during President Duterte’s official visit to Russia next month,” he said.
Bello said he would join the President in a visit to Russia in the first week of October.
According to Bello, a team of labor officials will be flying to Russia ahead of the President to finalize the signing of the agreement for the hiring of Filipino household service workers and skilled employees.
The number of OFWs to be deployed to Russia will not be limited, Bello said.
“It depends on the number of job applicants,” he said.
The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) will issue the implementing regulations after the forging of the agreement.
Bello said Russia is pushing for a government-to-government deployment, but the POEA wants the participation of private recruitment agencies.
