All-female cop station launched in Siquijor

Romina Cabrera - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — A police station to be manned only by policewomen was launched in Maria town in Siquijor yesterday.

Twenty-one policewomen dubbed “Mariang Pulis” will guard the municipality, which has a total land area of 53.37 square kilometers.

The station will be headed by Capt. Judith Mesas, who along with the other policewomen underwent capacity development training.

Col. Angela Rejano, Siquijor police director, said the Mariang Pulis initiative signals a new opportunity for women in the police force.

“This new concept of gender and development for policewomen in Siquijor... signals the time to move forward in promoting the vision and mission of the PNP (Philippine National Police) in creating an opportunity for women to strengthen their role... in the law enforcement pillar,” Rejano said.

Central Visayas police director Brig. Gen. Debold Sinas said he supports the initiative, which is seen to advance women empowerment.

The town had a pre-colonial settlement named after a native woman Kangminya.

It was renamed Maria in honor of the Our Lady of Divine Providence, the town’s patron saint.
