Manila offers amnesty to 50,000 motorists

Rey Galupo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau (MTPB) yesterday called on at least 50,000 motorists who have yet to claim their driver’s licenses to avail themselves of the city government’s amnesty program.

At least 50,000 licenses confiscated due to various traffic violations remain unclaimed at the MTPB since 2014.

MTPB director Dennis Viaje said erring drivers simply secure an affidavit of loss and apply for another license instead of paying a fine.

He said an agreement between the city government and the Land Transportation Office, which would take effect next year, would allow the two bodies to monitor if the motorist indeed lost his license.
