Magnitude 5.8 quake jolts Mindanao, Visayas

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5.8 earthquake shook parts of Mindanao and the Visayas yesterday, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. 

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the tremor occurred at about 1:39 p.m., with its epicenter traced 39 kilometers southeast of Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental. 

The quake was felt at Intensity 5, which is classified as strong, in Governor Generoso and Mati, Davao Oriental.

The tremor was felt at Intensity 4, or moderately strong, in Tarragona, Davao Oriental;  Davao City, and the cities of Tagum and Panabo in Davao del Norte.

Phivolcs said the quake was felt at Intensity 3 in Lebak, Sultan Kudarat; Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur; General Santos City; Alabel, Malapatan, Glan and Kiamba in Sarangani; Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur; Bislig City, and Butuan City. 

The quake was felt at Intensity 2 in San Francisco, Southern Leyte; Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur; Koronadal City; Magpet, North Cotabato; Kalilangan, Bukidnon, and Cagayan de Oro City. 

Phivolcs warned the public on possible aftershocks. 

Also yesterday, a magnitude 4.7 quake struck 14 kms northwest of Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro at about 1:17 a.m.
