MANILA, Philippines — The state weather bureau lifted yesterday tropical cyclone wind signal No. 1 over Batanes as Typhoon Liwayway (international name Lingling) started to move away from the country.

However, a low-pressure area spotted off Mindanao entered the Philippine area of responsiblity yesterday.

Ana Clauren, Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) weather specialist, said the low-pressure area was located 860 kilometers east-northeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur at 3 p.m. yesterday.

Clauren said the weather disturbance could also intensify into a tropical depression.

PAGASA said the next cyclone to enter the country would be given a local name of Marilyn.

As of 3 p.m. yesterday, the eye of Liwayway was located 420 kms northeast of Basco, Batanes, packing winds of 140 kms per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 170 kph. It was moving northeast at 10 kph.

Clauren said Liwayway has no direct effect on any part of the country.

However, she said the typhoon would enhance the southwest monsoon and dump rains over Ilocos, the Cordilleras and Cagayan Valley.

PAGASA warned residents in the areas against floods and landslides.

Sea travel remains risky, especially for small vessels, in the northern and western seaboards of Luzon, it said.

Liwayway is the 12th cyclone to enter the country this year and second this month. It is expected to leave the country at the latest tonight.
