MANILA, Philippines — Police officers on bicycles are patrolling the streets of San Juan City to protect its residents from criminals, Mayor Francis Zamora announced yesterday.

Zamora said the deployment of bicycle-riding policemen was part of the police force’s  quick response in the neighborhood program.

“Mas mabilis silang makaka-responde at makapag-patrolya sa ating lungsod anumang oras nang hindi maiipit sa traffic,” he said.

City police chief Col. Ariel Fulo said 30 police officers on bicycles are working in shifts, doing routine patrols in the Greenhills business district and other areas in San Juan.

He said 30 bicycles were donated by Hypro Construction and Development Corp. to the police.

Fulo vowed to maintain the peace and order situation in San Juan, where an average of only two crimes happen every day.
