BOC to review donation of seized vehicles at CEZA
MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Customs (BOC) will create a legal team that will review proposals to donate more than 800 second-hand vehicles seized at the Cagayan Economic Zone Authority (CEZA).
Edward James Dy Buco, deputy commissioner of the BOC assessment operations and coordination group, said the review is seen to facilitate the implementation of President Duterte’s order to distribute the second-hand vehicles to local government units and other government agencies.
The President said the Armed Forces of the Philippines and Philippine National Police should be among the recipients.
“The BOC is hopeful that the... vehicles could finally be put to good use instead of letting them rot,” the BOC said.
The vehicles include sports cars.
A Supreme Court ruling upheld the constitutionality of Executive Order 156, which prohibits the importation of second-hand vehicles. The EO aims to strengthen the local automotive industry and prevent smuggling.
Arienito Claveria, BOC district collector at the Port of Aparri, said they would coordinate with the management of CEZA on the disposition of the second-hand vehicles.
