4 dead in Eastern Samar shooting
TACLOBAN CITY , Philippines — Two suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels and two civilians were killed in a shooting in a cockpit in Sulta, Eastern Samar on Friday.
The civilians were identified as cockpit workers Juancho Basada and Wennie Guballa, who were hit in the crossfire.
The identities of the slain communist guerrillas have yet to be determined.
Initial reports showed the NPA rebels fired at two Army Scout Rangers. The soldiers were unhurt.
Another NPA rebel managed to escape.
In another alleged NPA attack, Virgelio Loquias, chairman of Barangay San Antonio in Hilongos, Leyte, was shot dead while fishing in Mahangin creek at around 1 p.m., also on Friday.
Witnesses said the gunmen claimed Loquias had a “major offense” against their organization.
