Suspension of skirt uniform requirement sought in Baguio schools
BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — The city government here has been asked to suspend the wearing of skirt uniforms for female elementary and high school students to contain the spread of dengue.
Donnabel Tubera, infectious diseases cluster head of the city health services office, said thick pants, socks and long-sleeved clothes are preferred, noting that dengue-carrying mosquitoes can sting through thin cloth.
The number of dengue cases in the city increased by 24 percent or 280 cases, with one death, from Jan. 1 to July 29. There were only 220 cases during the same period last year.
On July 23, Benguet Gov. Melchor Diclas issued Memorandum Circular 4 ordering public schools district supervisors and principals to suspend the wearing of skirt school uniforms during the rainy season as a precautionary measure against dengue.
