Soldier found dead in Army camp

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines — A soldier was found dead in an Army camp here yesterday. 

T/Sgt. Rogelio Asuncion, 43, was found lifeless in his room at Camp Evangelista, headquarters of the Army’s 4th Infantry Division, in Barangay Patag at about 5:20 a.m., according to a police report. 

Maj. Evan Viñas, Cagayan de Oro police spokesman, said probers have yet to determine if Asuncion committed suicide as noted in the police report.

Viñas cited reports that Asuncion accidentally shot himself while cleaning his .45-caliber pistol.

Initial investigation showed Asuncion was hit on the left side of his chest. The bullet pierced his heart. 

Asuncion was the finance officer of the 58th Infantry Battalion.
