‘Revoke Baguio’s new taxi franchises’

Artemio Dumlao - The Philippine Star

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — Saying it will only add to traffic woes, the mayor of this city questioned the approval of 400 additional taxi franchises by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).

“The LTFRB is not the one managing the traffic in our city ... it should be inherent on the regulatory body to first coordinate with the local government to evaluate and assess whether or not there is still a need for more taxi units to ply the city’s limited routes,” Mayor Benjamin Magalong said.

The LTFRB authorized the opening of 200 taxi franchises that will be on fleet management and approved another 200 franchises in lieu of the 195 units that are no longer operating.

Magalong said the city government had earlier voiced its opposition to the opening of taxi franchises on fleet management.

LTFRB data showed that there are 5,215 registered public utility jeepneys, 3,246 taxis, 459 public utility vans and 345 buses operating in the city.
