Caloocan cop on trial for boy’s murder

Marc Jayson Cayabyab - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — A former Caloocan policeman yesterday faced the first day of trial for allegedly killing a six-year-old boy during a purported hot pursuit operation last April.

Victim Gian Habal’s mother, Jessa, testified during the hearing at the Caloocan Regional Trial Court Branch 128 that she went out to check after a gunshot was heard outside their house in Camarin on April 28.

It was then she saw her son dead with a gunshot wound in the head and the only person she saw walking away was then Cpl. Rocky delos Reyes.

Delos Reyes also faces charges of frustrated murder for shooting at the foot of Gian’s grandmother, Elsa, when she grabbed him to prevent him from escaping.

The prosecution cut short the direct examination after Jessa was told to bring the receipts of the hospital and funeral expenses to assess the civil damages for the boy’s death.

The trial will resume on Sept. 11.

Delos Reyes was dismissed from service for grave misconduct for the boy’s death. He allegedly fired the shot using a firearm he carried without a permit during an elections gun ban. He claimed he engaged a drug suspect in a shootout.
