6 Indonesians, 3 Pinoys held for illegal fishing
ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — Six Indonesians and three Filipinos were arrested for illegal fishing in the waters off Tawi-Tawi on Sunday.
Citing a report received by the Joint Task Force Tawi-Tawi, Maj. John Arvin Encinas, Western Mindanao Command spokesman, said dried sharks found in the boat and the fishermen’s catch of endangered fish species were confiscated.
The report said personnel of the Special Operation Unit of the Bongao maritime police launched the operation after conducting surveillance on the suspects.
“The six foreigners and their Filipino companions are under tactical interrogation... The Bureau of Immigration has been alerted on the presence of foreigners,” Encinas said.
He said they are checking if the fishermen are connected with any criminal group operating in the area.
