Ex-Manila vice mayor Barbers, 95
MANILA, Philippines — Former Manila vice mayor and police chief Gen. James G. Barbers died last Saturday. He was 95.
Friends hailed him as the most honest Manila police chief ever, and a disciplinarian. He served as chief of what at the time was called the Western Police District from Dec. 20, 1974 until 1978 when he was elected vice mayor of Manila.
Barbers was the uncle of the late senator Robert Barbers, who also served as a police officer before entering politics.
James Barbers was born on Jan. 19, 1924 and grew up in Cabugao, Ilocos Sur where he maintained a home.
He is survived by his wife Blanche, a health professional, and children Joseph Reagan and Binky.
Barbers’ remains lie in state at the St. Peter Chapels along Quezon Avenue in Quezon City. Interment is this Sunday at the Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina.
