Dinagat board member shot dead in Surigao
SURIGAO CITY, Philippines — A member of the provincial board of Dinagat Islands was killed in an attack by motorcycle-riding men in this city yesterday morning.
Wenefredo Olofernes, 52, and his partner, Olive, were on a motorcycle when the assailants waylaid them in Barangay Luna at around 7:10 a.m.
Olofernes was declared dead on arrival at the Caraga Regional Hospital due to a gunshot to the head, according to Brig. Gen. Gilbert Cruz, Caraga police director.
Olive suffered bruises after she fell off the motorcycle. She was taken to the same hospital for treatment.
The Caraga police offered a P50,000 reward for any information leading to the capture of the assailants.
Olofernes has no known enemies in Surigao City, where he owns property, and in his hometown in San Jose, Dinagat Islands, according to Lt. Col. Randy Amaro, city police chief.
The victim was not involved in illegal drugs.
“He was known as a good and kindhearted person in his community,” Amaro told radio dzBB.
Olive said her husband, who ran as an independent during the recent elections, did not receive threats to his life. – Emmanuel Tupas
