Cop, ex-village chief shot dead
COTABATO CITY, Philippines — A police officer and a former barangay chairman were killed in gun attacks in North Cotabato and Maguindanao, respectively, on Sunday.
S/Sgt. Edward Dimpaso of the Maguindanao police was about to ride his motorcycle, which he had parked near a bakery in Midsayap, when he was shot, Lt. Col. Benito Rotia, town police chief, said.
Dimpaso was pronounced dead on arrival in a hospital.
Police said Edwin Guiamelon, former chairman of Barangay Midpandakan in General Pendatun town, was in front of a fruit stand along the highway in Barangay New Isabela, Tacurong City when he was attacked.
In Masbate, Domingo Barotil, 47, councilman of Barangay Potingbato in Esperanza town, was shot several times by a lone gunman during a town fiesta.
The assailants fled on motorcycles.
