John Unson - The Philippine Star

MAGUINDANAO, Philippines — Personnel of the 7th Marine Battalion based in this province left for Sulu on Sunday to augment government troopers fighting Abu Sayyaf bandits.

Officials of the Philippine Marine Corps (PMC), 6th Infantry Division and First Marine Brigade in Lebak, Sultan Kudarat led the sendoff ceremony for the soldiers from Upi, South Upi and Datu Blah Sinsuat towns.

The soldiers were picked up at the Polloc Port in Parang by the Navy’s BRP Davao del Sur.

Maj. Gen. Alvin Parreño, Philippine Marine commandant, called on the soldiers to efficiently perform their mission in Sulu in keeping with their sworn duty.

Earlier this month, the military deployed an additional 1,700 Army soldiers in Jolo to help crush the Abu Sayyaf and other terrorist groups.

Capt. Felix Serapio Jr., PMC spokesman, said the 8th Marine Battalion Landing Team is also ready for deployment in Sulu after a nine-month training in Manila.

Also in Sulu are two battalions of the Philippine Marine Ready Force.
