MANILA, Philippines — The crime volume in the country dropped by nearly 10 percent last month, according to the Philippine National Police (PNP).

Records from the PNP-Directorate for Investigation and Detective Management showed the total crime volume in May at 38,284, which is lower by 9.97 percent compared to 42,527 for the same month last year.

Interior Secretary Eduardo Año lauded the PNP for its efforts to reduce crime as he urged the police to continue the campaign.

Año also commended the PNP for ridding its ranks of scalawags, which he said have tainted the image of the police force.

Records showed that index crimes such as murder, homicide, physical injury, rape, robbery theft, carnapping and cattle rustling dropped by 22.59 percent, from 7,421 in May 2018 to 5,744 this year.

Non-index crimes such as reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, physical injury and damage to property, and violation of special laws, dropped by 7.30 percent, from 35,106 to 32,540 for the same period.
