MANILA, Philippines — Two Manila barangay councilors were killed in separate attacks since Sunday night.

Roel Hernandez, 42, was driving his tricycle on the way to the Navotas fish port when an assailant pursued him and shot him along H. Lopez street in Barangay Northbay Boulevard South, Navotas at around 9:20 p.m.

Hernandez was a kagawad in Barangay 363 in Sta. Cruz, Manila.

Around nine hours later, Barangay 131 kagawad Ernesto Sibug was about to board his Mitsubishi Adventure when an unidentified assailant in a black Toyota Fortuner shot him repeatedly at past 6 a.m., said Chief Master Sgt. Donald Panaligan, Manila Police District (MPD) homicide investigator.

Closed-circuit television videos showed the assailant’s vehicle had no plate number and conduction sticker, Panaligan said.

Sibug is the second Barangay 131 councilor killed in less than two weeks.

Joshua Nagpacan was standing along Pinoy street when three men on two motorcycles shot him repeatedly at around 11:12 a.m. on May 9.

MPD Station 1 commander Lt. Col. Rey Magdaluyo said they are hunting down alleged hitman and drug pusher Benedicto Bidor, who was recently released from the Manila City Jail, in connection with the two murders.

Navotas police chief Col. Rolando Balasabas said they are checking if Hernandez’s murder is connected to the attack on Sibug. – Marc Jayson Cayabyab
