MANILA, Philippines — The Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) yesterday filed petitions for a salary increase for minimum wage earners in Central Luzon, Calabarzon and Northern Mindanao.

The TUCP stressed the need for “urgent attention... to nutrition deficiency among Filipino workers and their families due to severely diminished take home pay.”

The group is seeking a minimum salary of P768 for workers in Central Luzon and Calabarzon and P782 in Northern Mindanao.

The TUCP said the real value of the P400 daily minimum wage in Central Luzon and Calabarzon is only P339.85 and P340.72,  respectively.

The group said the real value of the take-home pay of a minimum wage earner in Northern Mindanao is only P255.7.

“The existing minimum wage barely meets basic human needs for food, water, clothing, education, transport, health, housing, toiletries and electricity,” the TUCP said.

The previous wage orders in Calabarzon, Central Luzon and Northern Mindanao were issued in April last year, last August and Nov. 1, respectively.
