Magnitude 5.5 quake hits Tawi-Tawi

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5.5 earthquake hit Tawi-Tawi yesterday, but it did not cause any damage.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the tremor struck 358 kilometers southeast of South Ubian town at about 3:19 p.m.

Phivolcs said it was not expecting a tsunami or aftershocks from the quake.

Another quake with a magnitude  of 2.8 struck San Julian, Eastern Samar at around 1:45 a.m. yesterday.

Phivolcs said it was an aftershock of the magnitude 6.5 quake which hit Eastern Samar on April 23.

Both quakes were unfelt.

However, the agency’s instruments recorded the quake in Eastern Samar at Intensity 1 in Borongan City.
