Red Cross: Prepare children for disasters
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) has underscored the need to instill the concept of disaster preparedness among children amid the series of earthquakes that hit parts of the country this week.
In an interview with The Chiefs on Cignal TV on Tuesday night, PRC deputy secretary general Susan Pineda-Mercado said disaster preparedness should be taught among children at an early age.
“Practice gives children confidence. So when a disaster strikes, they can stay focused,”Mercado said.
She said parents could train their children to be ready in case of fires through simple activities such as getting out of the window.
The PRC implements the 4Ps or predict, plan, prepare and practice.
“At Red Cross, we train people about first aid measures and basic life support,” Mercado said.
She also urged parents to designate a meeting point where their children could go if an earthquake occurs.
“Assign a meeting point. We have to assume that communication lines will be cut off during earthquakes,” she said.
