Surigao Norte town cop chief relieved

Ben Serrano - The Philippine Star

SURIGAO CITY, Philippines — The police chief of Socorro, Surigao del Norte was relieved from his post on Tuesday for allegedly engaging in partisan politics.

Lt. Nolie Magalona and 15 of his men were replaced pending investigation of allegations that they are favoring certain candidates, Col. Ronelo Jaurigue, Surigao del Norte police chief, said.

Jaurigue said the Caraga police office was also dissatisfied with the Soccoro police’s handling of the investigation into the killings of two supporters of rival candidates for mayor.

Magalona was replaced by Surigao City police chief investigator Capt. Giovanni Tindoy.

The other police officers were transferred to other municipalities.

Jaurigue said the relief of the police officers should serve as a warning to PNP personnel to adhere to the agency’s mandate of “political neutrality” in the May elections.

Jaurigue said administrative charges would be filed against those who favor certain candidates or allow themselves to be used to harass the opponents of these bets.
