MANILA, Philippines — Three suspected members of the New People's Army were killed and another was captured after a firefight with police in Northern Samar on Thursday.

At least 50 members of the NPA, the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, attacked the Victoria Municipal Police Station in Northern Samar at about 3:44 a.m., police report said.

According to a Facebook post from PNP Catbalogan, two police officers were wounded in the firefight, which lasted until 6:40 a.m.

Police Brig. Gen. Dionardo Carlos, regional director, said the suspected NPA members were aboard a truck, wearing military uniforms and yellow bands on their heads when they raided the police station, ABS-CBN News reported.

A report from CNN Philippines also indicated that the 15 police officers on duty when the rebels attacked went to the rooftop of the station to shoot at the suspected NPA members.

Last week, President Rodrigo Duterte announced the "permanent termination" of peace talks between the government panel and the CPP.

"I am no longer entertaining any interventions or maybe persuasions in this democratic state of the Republic of the Philippines. My sense is that maybe you can talk to the next President of this republic one day," Duterte said during an event in Fort Bonifacio in Taguig.
