1 dead, 2 hurt in Zamboanga gas leak

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — A worker died while his two companions were hospitalized following a gas leak in an ice plant in Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur on Saturday.

Jelmar Bulay, 19, died while being treated at the Aisah Hospital in Barangay San Pedro, where his companions – machine operator Brinton Wasayas and ice harvester Alberto Singedas – were taken for treatment.

Investigation showed the victims were working in the ice plant on Rizal Avenue, Tuburan district when the gas pipes suffered damage, according to Chief Superintendent Emmanuel Luis Licup, Zamboanga regional police director.

Responding police and fire officers rescued the victims, who suffered difficulty in breathing.

Authorities were still investigating the incident.
