Drug suspect slain in shootout

Ed Amoroso - The Philippine Star

LAGUNA, Philippines — A drug suspect was killed while a police officer and a bystander were wounded in an alleged encounter in Biñan yesterday.

Maburak Cabugatan was declared dead on arrival at the  hospital, according to Senior Superintendent Eleazar Matta, Laguna police director.

Police Officer 1 Alric Natividad of the Biñan police drug enforcement unit and the bystander, whose name was not immediately available, were taken to the same hospital for treatment.

Matta said that Cabugatan ran to his house after sensing that he was dealing with police officers, who conducted a sting along Dr. A. Gonzales street in Barangay San Jose.

The suspect reportedly returned armed with a handgun and shot the officers, triggering a firefight that resulted in his death.

Natividad suffered a gunshot wound in the stomach. – Emmanuel Tupas
