New People’s Army members kill militiaman in Negros Oriental

BACOLOD CITY , Philippines — The New People’s Army has claimed responsibility for the killing of a member of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit in Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental on Monday.

Cerillo Malig-on, 44, was preparing food for the birthday celebration of his son in Sitio Batong-Boang, Barangay Trinidad when he was shot, Brig. Gen. Ignacio Madriaga, 302nd Infantry Brigade commander, said, quoting the victim’s wife Marlyn.

In a statement, JB Regalado of the Leonardo Panaligan Command justified the killing, saying Malig-on was a legitimate target because he was with the 12th Infantry Battalion.

Madriaga condemned the killing, noting that the victim was off duty and unarmed when he was attacked.
