MANILA, Philippines — The Estrella Service Road in Makati will be partially closed to motorists starting next week for the repair of the Rockwell Bridge, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced yesterday.

MMDA general manager Jojo Garcia said the service road – from Gumamela street to JP Rizal – would be closed starting at 11 p.m. on March 23.

He said around 500 vehicles traverse the road per hour.

Garcia said the MMDA would open other alternate routes for motorists while the Rockwell bridge is undergoing repair.

Motorists coming from EDSA must turn to Gumamela street, left to Camia street to their destination.

The MMDA said it would deploy additional enforcers in the area to make sure that the road closure would not cause traffic jams.

The rehabilitation of Rockwell Bridge, which was funded by China, will widen the thoroughfare from two to four lanes.

MMDA hiring 223 security officers

Meanwhile, the MMDA has earmarked P64.224 million for the hiring of more than 200 security officers to be assigned at the MMDA’s field offices.

In an invitation to bid posted on the agency’s official website, the MMDA said the amount was allotted for the salaries of 223 security guards for nine months.

Each guard will receive a monthly salary of P32,000, according to the MMDA.

A pre-bid conference will be held on Friday at the MMDA main office in Makati.

The security guards will be assigned at the MMDA’s Southwest Interim Provincial Terminal, Pasig River ferry service and Flood Control Sewerage and Management Office.
