Bureau of Immigration arrests Russian fugitive
MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Immigration (BI) arrested on Tuesday a Russian fugitive wanted for fraud in Moscow.
Likharev Anton, 37, was nabbed at the BI main office in Manila while applying for extension of his temporary visitor’s visa.
The BI Board of Commissioners issued a summary deportation order against Likharev in December last year upon learning that he is wanted in his country for large-scale fraud and violation of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.
Likharev is being held at the BI detention facility at Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City pending his deportation.
“We will not allow fraudsters like him to hide in the Philippines as they pose risks to public interest,” Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente said in a statement.
Likharev was apprehended in 2017 for violating the Fisheries Code of the Philippines and a municipal ordinance after he killed a green sea turtle with a spear in Dauin, Negros Oriental.
The Russian said he did not intend to kill the turtle, adding that he did not know that the area is a marine sanctuary.
