New People’s Army burn heavy equipment in Negros Oriental

Gilbert Bayoran - The Philippine Star

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — Suspected New People’s Army rebels burned five tractors and a vintage vehicle in Manjuyod, Negros Oriental on Monday.

About 50 communist rebels raided the compound owned by Martin Longa, chairman of Barangay Sta. Monica, and set the heavy equipment on fire.

Senior Superintendent Raul Tacaca, Negros Oriental police director, said the rebels also took two cellular phones, two handheld radios and a Wi-Fi device.

Initial damage was pegged at P3 million.

Authorities said Longa confirmed that the rebels demanded that he pay them P500,000 in so-called protection money.

Last month, communist guerrillas burned 11 heavy equipment and two generator sets owned by a mining firm in Ayungon town also in Negros Oriental. Damage was estimated at around P120 million.
