SUV hits tricycle in Iloilo; 4 dead

ILOILO CITY, Philippines — Four people died when a sport utility vehicle collided with a tricycle in Sta. Barbara, Iloilo before midnight yesterday.

Senior Inspector Jose Rey Pabalan, Sta. Barbara police chief, identified the fatalities as Jero Poll Souribio, his partner Janice Surmieda, 21, and Surmieda’s brothers Romel, 25, and Eljay, 19. The victims were thrown out from the tricycle due to the impact of the collision.

Surmieda and Romel were declared dead on arrival in a hospital, where Jero Poll died while being treated. Ejay died while being treated at the West Visayas State University Medical Center.

The driver of the Hyundai Tucson, Aries Severo, was injured and remained confined at the Western Visayas Medical Center yesterday. 

Initial investigation showed that Severo was supposed to bring his friends home when the accident occurred while he was overtaking the tricycle in Barangay Lanag.

Severo’s companions escaped.
