Gloria Arroyo vows to help 5,000 poor families in Manila
MANILA, Philippines — Speaker Gloria Macapagal Arroyo yesterday promised to help 5,000 poor families in Parola, Manila get the titles to the land they are occupying.
She asked Negros Occidental Rep. Alfredo Benitez, who chairs the House committee on housing, to schedule a hearing that would facilitate the award of titles.
She visited Parola to check on beneficiaries of Proclamation No. 581, which she issued in March 2004 when she was the country’s president and which set aside five hectares in Parola in Tondo and Binondo districts for socialized housing for occupants of the area.
Residents thanked the former president for her proclamation. However, they informed her that the issuance of titles had been delayed because the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Philippine National Railways and the Government Service Insurance System are claiming the land she had awarded to them.
Arroyo asked Benitez to thresh things out with officials of the three agencies so that the land could finally be titled in the names of intended beneficiaries.
The Speaker has been checking on projects she launched as president.
On Thursday, she promised to help 8,000 poor families who were beneficiaries of a similar land award proclamation at the national government center in Quezon City. – Jose Rodel Clapano
