Police station’s social media accounts hacked

Jennifer Rendon - The Philippine Star

ILOILO CITY, Philippines — The Facebook and email accounts of a municipal police station in Aklan have been hacked, officials said yesterday.

Instead of a photo of the newly constructed police station, the Balete PNP Taga Protekta – the official Facebook account of the Balete municipal police – featured  a photo of a woman in a provocative pose.

As of yesterday afternoon, the account remained active.

Police Officer 2 Ma.  Jane Vega, spokesperson for the Aklan police, confirmed that the police station’s Facebook account was hacked.

Vega said they discovered the breach on Jan. 2 when a non-uniformed personnel tried to access the account but failed.

“Our personnel could not access the account using the password,” Vega said.

She said the personnel tried to open the station’s email account, but it too was no longer accessible.

Town police chief Inspector Liezel Goboy said they would report the breach to Facebook once they retrieve the photos and documents posted on the accounts.

“By using other accounts, they backtracked and saved the pictures and documents and did some screen shots,” Vega said.

Investigation showed the hacker is located in Victorias City, Negros Occidental.
